Actually no one have any doubts that Gmail have fantastic spam filters, but how many of us feel overwhelmed by hundreds, sometimes thousands of messages a day — mail from colleagues, from lists, about appointments and automated mail which being valid are often not important ?

To address this issue Google introduce Priority Inbox (in beta) — an experimental new way of taking on information overload in Gmail. This new feature allows to classify messages according it’s priority, to let you focus in the most important ones.

Priority Inbox splits your inbox into three sections: “Important and unread,” “Starred” and “Everything else”.

As messages arrive, Gmail automatically mark some of them as important. Gmail uses different indicators to predict which messages are important, for example the people you email most and which messages you open and reply to…

And when you use Gmail, the system “learns” and evolves getting better at categorizing messages. Additionally, the user can help improving the system by classifying messages according his criteria, just marking a conversation as important or not important.
